John Wilson Townsend Collection, 1883-ca. 1890 bulk 1883-1889.

The John Wilson Townsend Collection consists of photographs and lithographs obtained from John Wilson Townsend, a historian, book collector and Kentucky Historical Society associate editor from 1910 to 1911. The collection was assembled by Townsend, but photographers R.S. Pollard, Mattern and James K. Hamilton were listed on some of the photographs as having taken the pictures. The photographs consist of forty (40) albumen prints and one (1) silver print. The subjects of the photographs include the 1883 flood in Frankfort, Ky.; several images of the Centennial parade and picnic in 1886 in Frankfort, Ky.; images taken by photographer R.S. Pollard of trestle no. 2, the Buffalo Trace viaduct, and the Elkhorn trestle of the Kentucky Midland Railroad. Other photographs taken by photographers Mattern and James K. Hamilton of Frankfort, Ky. show office interiors, residences, and the Woodlake School. There are thirteen (13) lithographs. The subjects are various counties in Kentucky, Lee County, Virginia and the Cumberland Gap from the Tennessee side. The photographs consist of one (1) folder. The photographs and lithographs have been put in a numerical order in an itemized list describing each photograph. The collection has six (6) folders and is 0.5 cubic feet.

Biographical note: John Wilson Townsend, a native of Fayette County, Kentucky, was a graduate of Transylvania University and the author of "Kentucky in American Literature" (1915) and numerous other works on Kentucky history. He was employed variously as a teacher, librarian, and editor, but known chiefly as a bookseller and collector of first editions, having operated the Graceland Book Shop and the Blue Grass Book Shop in Lexington.
